Ingredients
- 3 onions
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 tsp brown sugar
- 6 cups water
- 8 slices french bread
- 2 tbl dry white wine
- Salt and pepper
- 1/2 cup grated gruyere or swiss cheese
Steps
- Peel and slice onions, melt half of the butter and cook til transparent
- Sprinkle onions with flour- cook, stirring until flour covers
- Add sugar, then graduately stir in water. Simmer for 20 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 450
- Fry bread in remaining butter. Place bread in bottom of bowl or in oven-proof soup tureen. Add wine. Pour soup on bread
- Sprinkle with cheese. Bake 5-10 minutes.
