Onion Soup

Ingredients

  • 3 onions
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 tsp brown sugar
  • 6 cups water
  • 8 slices french bread
  • 2 tbl dry white wine
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1/2 cup grated gruyere or swiss cheese

Steps

  1. Peel and slice onions, melt half of the butter and cook til transparent
  2. Sprinkle onions with flour- cook, stirring until flour covers
  3. Add sugar, then graduately stir in water. Simmer for 20 minutes.
  4. Preheat oven to 450
  5. Fry bread in remaining butter. Place bread in bottom of bowl or in oven-proof soup tureen. Add wine. Pour soup on bread
  6. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake 5-10 minutes.
